(Mary) Kathy Jacobs was born and raised in Sioux City, Iowa. She attended Nursing School at the then Methodist Hospital School of Nursing. She worked in critical care and then at the school of nursing at St. Luke’s Hospital in Sioux City. Kathy moved to Colorado and then to Texas before moving back to Iowa and settling in Hawarden in 1981. Her son attended West Sioux Schools.
Kathy started as a staff nurse in critical and intensive care units and later became a critical care educator as well as a nurse manager. In addition, she spent a few short years working as an office nurse for a group of Pediatricians. After nearly 30 years in nursing, Kathy decided to change her focus and went into the environmental safety field in 1996. She is now the Director of Environmental Safety for Avera McKennan in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Because of the friendly acceptance by the Hawarden Community, Kathy wanted to give something back and decided to run for the Hospital Board. Even though she was unsuccessful the first time, Kathy was asked to serve an unfinished term. After that she then ran and was elected for her first 4-year term. Kathy has served as Secretary several times.
Kathy was appointed to serve on the Hawarden Community Hospital Foundation Board and served as its President and Secretary. She also has been involved in the Hawarden Area Arts Council for several years and served briefly as its secretary.
In addition to my son, Kathy has one granddaughter who is now 3 years old and her greatest joy. She enjoys spending as much time with her as she can and frequently brings her to Hawarden for the weekend.
Kathy also enjoys reading and doing some gardening on her deck in the summer.
Hawarden is a great community in which to live and Kathy is very appreciative of the opportunity afforded her to use her talents and expertise in making our hospital the best it can be.
